From Drums in the Night

by Bertholt Brecht

Kareem has been directing plays for over ten years in both the U.S. and Canada. He is a graduate of Columbia University’s MFA program in Theatre Directing. Kareem is the founder and Artistic Director of The Alternate Theatre, a company which earned major attention in Montreal for presenting technically innovative and emotionally resonant work by playwrights largely unknown to Canadian audiences. Kareem’s work with The Alternate Theatre has continued in New York where he has directed notable Canadian plays and re-imagined works from the canon.

Born to Egyptian immigrants in French-speaking Canada, Kareem grew up in a household where Arabic, English and French were spoken in equal quantities, providing a myriad of cultural and linguistic influences which he continues to explore in his work. He gained local notoriety as an award-winning public speaker, actor, director, and writer. He is a published poet, short story writer, and playwright. His poetry is part of the curriculum in college-level literature classes in Quebec.

As a director, his interests lie in the intersection of the two major aspects of his experience: science and language. His work endeavors to highlight the grace and fluidity of the human body and its movement through space, as well as finding the clarity in language, text, and story to create a fully integrated theatrical experience that is highly visual, dynamic and emotional.
